PlanetSafe Lubricants Safety FAQ
General
Is this lubricant hazardous?
No. It is not classified as hazardous under OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard.
Does it contain California Prop 65 chemicals?
No. PlanetSafe Lubricants contain no chemicals listed under California Proposition 65 (no cancer, birth defect, or reproductive toxins).
Any long-term health risks?
No chronic hazards. Not carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic to reproduction.
First Aid
Eyes: Flush with clean water. If irritation persists, seek medical attention.
Skin: Wash with soap and water. If irritation develops and persists, seek medical attention.
Inhalation: Move to fresh air. If breathing difficulties occur, seek immediate medical attention.
Ingestion: Normally not an issue; if symptoms occur (nausea, diarrhea), seek medical attention.
Fire Safety
Is it flammable?
It may burn but will not ignite readily.
Flash point: >392°F / >200°C.
Extinguishing media: Dry chemical, CO₂, foam, or water spray. Avoid mixing foam and water.
Hazardous byproducts: Smoke, carbon monoxide, oxides of sulfur/nitrogen/phosphorus.
Spills & Handling
If it spills:
-
Stop spill if safe.
-
Avoid sewers/waterways.
-
Absorb with sand/vermiculite.
-
Slippery when spilled.
Safe storage:
-
Keep containers closed, labeled, and away from heat/flames.
-
Do not cut/weld/heat “empty” containers — residue may remain.
Personal Protection
Gloves/goggles needed?
Not required under normal use. Nitrile gloves and safety glasses are recommended for best practice.
Respirator needed?
Only if airborne oil mist exceeds limits:
-
TWA 5 mg/m³
-
STEL 10 mg/m³
Stability & Reactivity
-
Stable under normal use.
-
Avoid high heat and ignition sources.
-
Avoid strong oxidizers and strong reducers.
-
No hazardous reactions expected.
Toxicology
-
Not harmful by inhalation, skin, or ingestion at normal exposure.
-
Repeated skin contact may cause dryness or cracking.
-
Petroleum base oils are highly refined, not carcinogenic.
Environmental
-
Biodegradability: Not readily biodegradable but inherently biodegradable.
-
Water: Will float/spread on surface, binds to sediment.
-
Soil: Low mobility, slow biodegradation.
-
Toxicity to aquatic life: Not specifically tested; avoid releases into water.
Transport & Disposal
Transport: Not regulated by DOT (land), IMDG (sea), or IATA (air). Bulk shipments (≥3,500 gal) must comply with U.S. oil-spill rules.
Disposal:
-
Not federally classified as hazardous waste.
-
After use, usually regulated as “used oil” → recycle whenever possible.
-
Empty containers must be fully drained before disposal.
Physical Properties
-
Appearance: Amber, odorless liquid.
-
Specific Gravity: 0.85–0.89 (lighter than water).
-
Bulk Density: 7.1–7.4 lbs/gal.
-
Flash Point: >392°F (200°C).
-
Solubility: Negligible in water.
Regulatory
-
OSHA: Not hazardous.
-
SARA 302/311/312/313: Not reportable.
-
CERCLA: No reportable quantities.
