Safety & Handling
FIRE SAFETY & FLAMMABILITY
Is it flammable?
PlanetSafe Lubricants have an NFPA Flammability Rating of 1, meaning they must be pre-heated to significantly high temperatures before they will burn. They do not ignite readily under normal conditions.
What is the flash point?
Greater than 392°F / 200°C.
Can I apply this to hot metal?
Yes. Unlike aerosol solvents that flash-fire, AiM is designed to be Heat Seeking.
-
Operational Use: It is safe (and recommended) to apply AiM directly to hot metal, such as heating a seized bolt to “cherry red” to draw the lubricant into the threads.
-
Safety Note: Always apply the fluid to the hot part. Do not spray the lubricant through an open torch flame.
What should be used to extinguish it if it burns?
Use dry chemical, CO₂, foam, or water spray. Avoid mixing foam and water.
What combustion byproducts may occur?
While the product is stable, if forced to burn under extreme conditions, it may release smoke and gases including:
-
Carbon monoxide
-
Oxides of sulfur
-
Oxides of nitrogen
-
Oxides of phosphorus
SPILLS & HANDLING
What should I do if it spills?
-
Stop the spill if it can be done safely.
-
Prevent product from entering drains, sewers, or waterways.
-
Absorb using sand, vermiculite, or other inert absorbent material.
-
Clean thoroughly — spilled lubricant may create a slipping hazard.
How should this product be stored?
Store in closed, labeled containers.
-
Bulk Storage: Keep away from bulk heat sources, sparks, and open flames when storing.
-
Container Safety: Do not cut, weld, or heat “empty” containers — residue may still be present.
PERSONAL PROTECTION
Are gloves or goggles required?
Not required under normal use. PlanetSafe AiM is non-toxic and skin-safe. Many mechanics use it specifically because they can handle parts without worrying about chemical exposure.
-
Best Practice: Nitrile gloves and safety glasses are recommended in industrial settings as a general best practice for hygiene.
Is a respirator required?
No. The product is virtually odorless and safe for indoor use.
-
Exception: Only if airborne oil mist exceeds recommended exposure limits:
-
TWA: 5 mg/m³
-
STEL: 10 mg/m³
-
STABILITY & REACTIVITY
Is this product stable?
Stable under normal conditions of use.
What conditions should be avoided?
Avoid bulk storage in high heat or near ignition sources.
Are there incompatible materials?
Avoid strong oxidizers and strong reducers.
Are hazardous reactions expected?
No hazardous reactions expected under normal use.
TOXICOLOGY
Is this product toxic?
Not harmful by inhalation, skin contact, or ingestion at normal exposure levels.
Can repeated skin contact cause irritation?
Repeated or prolonged skin contact may cause dryness or cracking (degreasing of the skin).
Is it carcinogenic?
Petroleum base oils used are highly refined and are not considered carcinogenic.
ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION
Is this product biodegradable?
Not “readily” biodegradable (which implies rapid breakdown), but inherently biodegradable over time. We prioritize durability to prevent waste.
How does it behave in water?
May float and spread on the surface and may bind to sediment.
Is it toxic to aquatic life?
Not specifically tested. As with all oils, avoid release into waterways.
TRANSPORT & DISPOSAL
Is this regulated for transport?
Not regulated as a hazardous material under:
-
DOT (Land)
-
IMDG (Sea)
-
IATA (Air)
Bulk shipments (≥ 3,500 gallons) must comply with U.S. oil-spill prevention rules.
How should this be disposed of?
-
Not federally classified as hazardous waste.
-
After use, it may be regulated as used oil — recycle whenever possible.
-
Empty containers must be fully drained before disposal.
